Two tall trees, a birch and a beech, are growing side by side in the forest. One day they notice a small sapling sprouting between them.
The beech squints at it and says,
“Hey… is that a son of a beech or a son of a birch?”
The birch shrugs.
“I can’t tell from here.”
Just then, a woodpecker lands on the sapling.
The birch calls out,
“Woodpecker! You’re the expert. Take a taste and tell us—
is that little tree a son of a beech or a son of a birch?”
The woodpecker pecks at the sapling, pauses, smacks his beak thoughtfully, and says:
“It’s neither a son of a beech nor a son of a birch…
but I’ll tell you this—
it’s the finest piece of ash I’ve ever put my pecker in.”
